First: a separate guide for the parent
The Parent Start Guide is a separate file and the first piece of the kit. The parent reads it privately before giving the separate Student Workbook to the student. Students do not need to read the parent material.
It is designed for the part most essay resources skip: getting the workbook opened without turning it into another assignment or another fight.
It gives you a concrete handoff process, a first 25-minute session, and different routes for a student who is willing but overwhelmed, defensive and avoiding, or refusing entirely. It also shows you when to stay nearby, when to leave the room, and how to help with a memory without taking ownership of the story.
It includes language for the moments when:
- your student will not start;
- you think they chose the wrong topic;
- the first draft is very rough;
- they ask, “Is this good?”; or
- your suggestions are beginning to sound like replacement sentences.
The Parent–Student Reader Agreement comes before the student workbook. The student chooses the kind of feedback they want, and the parent agrees to remain inside that boundary.
You are not asked to hand over a PDF and hope. You receive a process for helping the student make one small, controlled start—while keeping the writing theirs.
Then: help the student get out of stuck
The opening section is a timed 90-minute Story Rescue.
Your student works through a rapid memory inventory, tests three possible stories, maps the strongest candidate, and writes the central moment before worrying about the perfect opening.
The goal is not a finished essay in 90 minutes. The goal is something more useful: real material and a direction worth drafting.
The kit also protects an important boundary: disclosure is not the same as depth. Students are never pushed to turn their most painful experience into application material simply because it appears dramatic.
After the draft: revise what actually matters
The kit walks the student through revision in the order strong writing requires:
- What will the reader remember?
- Which material belongs—and which material distracts?
- Where does the essay create movement?
- What claims need specific evidence?
- Does the reflection grow from the story?
- Only then: what needs to change at the sentence level?

Frequently asked questions
Is this an essay template?
No. Templates tend to make different students sound alike. The kit provides a repeatable process for finding and shaping the student’s own material.
Will it write the essay?
No. It helps the student generate material, make decisions, and revise. The submitted writing remains the student’s own.
Does my student need to know their topic first?
No. The first part is specifically designed for a student who says, “I have nothing to write about.”
What if a draft already exists?
Start with the Reader Memory Test and Revision Rescue. The topic-finding section can be skipped unless the student decides to test another direction.
Can we use it for supplemental and scholarship essays?
Yes. The process applies to personal writing beyond the main application essay, although shorter prompts may require a compressed drafting and revision cycle.
Is the parent supposed to complete it with the student?
Usually not. Parents should read their short section first; students should have privacy for the early written work. The kit identifies the points when a reader can be useful.
Does this include access to Margin?
The kit is a standalone purchase and does not include or discount Margin. Margin is a separate next step for students who want feedback on their actual work. Margin is $100 per month. The Season Pass is $500, enrollment closes October 31, and access continues through March 31. The first 100 subscribers receive Founding Class rates: $80 per month or $400 for the Season Pass. How do I get the files after I pay?
